Who is the Captain?

ABOUT ME

Everything you ever wanted to know about me...

...and a few things you probably didn't.

It's a question I ask myself every day. The Captain is ever changing and struggling to evolve despite the forces trying to hold him back.

I'm just an average dude in an average world trying to get through. I live with my wife, Morticia, my two daughters, Harlz & Rags, and our cat, Angel in Rotherham, a town which neighbours the City of Sheffield - the place of my birth.

So, where did it all begin?
I was born on a Wednesday in May back in the early 70s (about tea time) in the Northern General Hospital, Sheffield, to my parents, Robert & Tina. Initially living in Sheffield, later we moved to Killamarsh, a small town in North East Derbyshire (near Sheffield).

Who was your hero when you was a child?
My Dad.

How old and where were you when you had your first kiss?
Unless you're counting primary school it was probably about 13, I was seeing a girl called Nicola who lived around Bramall Lane, we used to snog in the lifts of Cole Brothers (large dept store, now John Lewis).

Weren't you a bus driver at some point, how did that happen?
When I first started my working life I was ambitious but lazy, always looking for the easy route instead of doing the hard work to achieve success. This proved to be my downfall. After working in IT and advertising I ended up working 'on the buses', which I continued to do until the end of October 2006. ( it was always a 'stop gap' but after 11 years I had ended up in a rut ), it wasn't big and it wasn't clever, but it paid my mortgage.

What is your biggest regret?
Where do I start? Maybe if stayed on at school to do A levels or I'd stuck at my first job or not moved jobs or I'd gone back to college. What's the point of regretting? I like to think that I learn and move on.

Do you still see any of your old friends from school? Who is your best friend?
I don't keep in touch or see anyone from my school days, I'm pretty happy for it to stay that way. My oldest and best friend is of course Mr C, we've known each other for 20 years. We were each others Best Man at our weddings and are Godparents for each others children. There is also the Hippie, he's been good to me over the years although now he lives abroad.

Some old school friends have contacted me on Facebook. It's been 20 years since I had any sort of contact with friends from back then.

When was 'the time of your life'?
I would define the best periods as all the nights out I enjoyed in Sheffield City Centre with my best friend, Mr C. It started with the Stone House and Gladstones and evolved into many nights spent in Cairo Jax (now closed). I used to go out in one of my suits, wild colourful kipper tie sporting a Rick Astley quiff.

How did you meet 'the wife'?
I met my future wife in 1994, I knew her before this date but would not be romantically linked to her until the night we went to Cairos to celebrate our birthdays. We enjoyed a wonderful summer together with drives in the country and visits to places of interest. By September we were seeing each other almost every day.

What about the wedding?
We got married at St Cecilia's, Sheffield in July 1999. Harley was a flower girl and Mr C was my best man (a duty I had performed at his wedding a year earlier). The reception was at the Grosvener House Hotel in the City Centre.

Do you have kids?
We have two daughters. The eldest (Harlz) was born in 1996 and my life changed forever. Years later, after many discussions we decided to try for a second baby. February 2001 Morticia was pregnant, Rags was born in October that year.

Do you snore?
I've never heard me but Mortica says I do.

What is the first thing you think when you wake up?
What time is it?.

What about the famous bus strike?
In 2004 I was involved in the biggest bus strike for 20 years. We all went out for 3 weeks. It was a hard time for us, just 3 weeks without a wage gave us months of hardship. Morticia was off work sick with exhaustion, times were certainly hard.

Your wife has been ill, how is she?
It's been a long and hard journey which started in 2004 when we learned that her exhaustion were caused by a hole in her heart. She had to give up her job as her condition deteriorated. In June 2007 she had a second of two operations which appears to have been successful. This however has had little impact on her quality of life and she still struggles to cope, she has been diagnosed with ME/CFS which she now has to deal with.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?
Wales. It's the most beautiful place on Earth.

Who is your idol, and why?
There are many people I look up to but if I had to single one out it would be Humphrey Bogart. He was cool before they invented the term.

Tea or Coffee?
Tea, I hate coffee. Milk and 1 sugar (or sweetener) please!

What is your favourite colour?
Orange.

What kind of movies do you most enjoy?
All movies. I really depends on my mood. Sometimes when I feel a little down there's nothing like a good comedy. If I'm stressed a good action 'no-brainer' is what I need. Sometimes I like to be engaged with an intelligent story. I have an 'unlimited card' for my local cinema so I can go as often as I choose.

Who is the most famous person you have ever met, who would you like to meet?
William Shatner to both.

In your opinion, is there life after death?
Yes.

What needs to change to make this world a better place?
Better communication. If people talked to each other rather than assuming things about each other then there would be a greater respect and understanding.

How often do you get a haircut?
Weekly, I do it myself.

Is it true your going bald?
Yep, it's genetic, my hair is getting thinner by the year. It really doesn't bother me and I actually quite like the look. Baldness doesn't have the stigma attached to it that it used to. I shave the lot off these days!

Which movie character would you like to be and why?
Austin Powers, because life should be groovy baby!

What is your favourite dessert?
Ice Cream.

Describe the best holiday you have taken.
Probably my honeymoon at Disneyland Paris. This would be closely followed by my trips to Wales.

If you can go for  dinner with a famous person, who will it be?
Kylie Minogue, but I probably could only stretch to a KFC.

Do you have any phobias?
Yes, I hate clowns. They scare the shit out of me.

What is your nickname?
The Captain, always has been.
